Headings

Use headings to structure your content. Proper headings make your Canvas pages easier to navigate—especially for screen reader users—and improve scannability for everyone.

Impact

Most users skim webpages to find relevant information. Headings allow screen reader users to do the same by providing a list of sections they can quickly navigate to. Simply changing text size or applying bold formatting does not create a true heading; screen readers only recognize headings applied through the heading format.

How To

  1. Select or type the text you want to designate as a heading.
  2. Choose the appropriate heading level from the drop‑down menu.

Things to Avoid

  • Avoid long, unbroken walls of text—use sections and headings.
  • Avoid using font size or styling to mimic headings.
  • Avoid forgetting that headings apply to all text areas in Canvas, including quizzes, announcements, and assignments.
